Inter-Gen-Jam
Who took part?
Young carers based at Crossroads Care Gateshead and The Carers Cultural Adventures Group, supported by Equal Arts, CoMusica, community youth music programme, and The Sage Gateshead.
Why?
- To bring together young and older people to work creatively to develop performance pieces to be showcased in a professional arts venue.
- To celebrate the performance talents of both young and older people Gateshead wide.
- To provide a professionally staged, free performance event that welcomed an audience of all generations to experience, enjoy and socially interact.
What took place?
Working alongside CoMusica project leaders Tariq Iman and Rachel Dyson, the groups took part in a series of Boomdang drumming and vocal workshops to create a musical performance piece which was performed as part of the programme of the Inter-Gen-Jam event. Meeting just once a week over a five week period the group devised their medley of new writing, old tunes, seasonal songs and pop favourites in readiness for the final performance in Hall 2 of The Sage Gateshead.
Both groups enjoyed making soups with chef Sam Storey. They developed the seasonally inspired flavours of Christmas Turkey Broth and Carrot and Orange.
Soul Soup Café Event
Inter-Gen-Jam was an afternoon concert, showcasing and celebrating the musical talents of performers, aged 8 – 88 years old, from communities across Gateshead.
Performing alongside The Cultural Adventures and Crossroads Young Carers group was:
Rhythm Nation, a youth percussion ensemble
Hattie Murdoch, a young up and coming singer-guitarist
The Kentucky Cowtippers, a young five-piece, bluegrass inspired band
Silvertron, an over 50s rock and pop group
Frock-On, a group of young, female singer-songwriters
Minor Rhythms, a percussion and drumming group
Over 100 guests of all ages enjoyed both Inter-Gen-Jam, and the two soups served afterwards by the Soul Soup Volunteer Crew.
